I think these days, we take disk space so much for granted we barely even give them a second thought. New computers come with a ton of disk space and we always take a ton to mean unlimited.

With our handy-dandy smart phones and digital cameras, we actually could end up using a whole lot more disk space than we ever have. But disk space is pretty cheap nowadays so no worries about tacking on more drives as and when the need arises.

Or you can offload some of those gigs to an online cloud storage site which is a pretty convenient way to do it. I don't really know much about it but I don't have to worry because there are some very useful cloud storage reviews out there that can quickly bring me up to speed. And you too if you're a disk space monster like me.

I like to do my homework before I sign up for new stuff or stuff that I'm not really familiar with. I mean, we're so spoilt for choice these days but which one best suits our needs is the big question. So go check out the link above and get yourself some reliable storage space.

Done a backup lately?

How often do you do a backup of your site or blog? I'll bet it's one of the things that few of us remember to do, or at least, need to be reminded to do. Sometimes I would suddenly think of it and panic because I haven't done a backup in goodness knows how long.

Certainly it can be very traumatic to wake up one morning to find something has happened to your site only to discover you don't even have a backup. Or the last backup you have is older than your sister's oldest child. I know, not cool.

So before disaster strikes, it's best to check out what's a good backup site that can host your backup. I personally prefer the convenience of an online backup site. At least I don't have to go hunting for physical storage and then have to label them and store them where I can easily find them later. Too much stuff in my home office already.

An online backup makes much more sense. You can easily compare the offerings of different online backup sites by reading the online backup review of your choice here. It really helps you narrow down which site to sign up with for your specific needs. I don't mean to nag but you really should go check them out now.

Sneaking back

And so it seems I've been MIA for a while. Well, okay, there's still a lot of work to be done to really resolve the issue over the long term but at least for now, we know what to expect.

And knowing is good because it helps us work out some sort of plan in the coming days and weeks ahead. Whether a refinance home loan or a reduction in spending is needed will depend on where we stand financially in all of this.

An accountant friend of mine thinks it's a good idea for the less-financial savvy folks to seek advice on what to do or approach a financial institution such as Credit Sesame to get an understanding of what all of this means. Obviously there's a lot to consider especially for those who are invested in stocks, property, etc.

I know there's a lot of confusion and even after listening to and reading the news, it still may not become any clearer to us. Goodness knows how many of us are standing here wondering how it's all going to affect us and what's the best we can do to get out of it.

To nap or not to nap, that is the question!

Yawn, looks like I could use an afternoon nap, right about now. I personally don't smoke but I love learning about new things. Apparently there's such a thing as an electronic cigarette. Of course I had no idea but after a bit of reading, I'm a little smarter now.

There's the electronic cigarette starter kit for beginners. One of the best ones comes with a charger case that resembles a real cigarette box which, even I have to admit, is much more convenient than what some chargers look like. It's small enough that you can carry it in the usual places where you would place a regular cigarette box like in a man's shirt pocket or a ladies' handbag.

Some electronic cigs, I read, offer just the menthol or tobacco but this one offers a whole range of exotic flavors like bacon and cheesecake. Wow, I would never have thought cigarettes come in these flavors. How cool is that!

I must've been living under a coconut shell because I always thought of smoking in terms of the regular old cigarettes and never knew that electronic cigs even existed until now. I wonder if the electronic cig helps filter out some of that nicotine?

Pork and beans

It's a long weekend. We have nowhere to go, not doing any shopping here, not interested in wearing what everyone else is wearing. So we shop elsewhere now, yay us! I mean, take Forever 21, for instance. Everyone's rushing there to pay through their noses for low quality stuff. It's so expensive here but in the US, Forever 21 is just another low-end store. There's a big sign outside saying their clothes start from $2.50. Compare that with what they charge here, haha!

As for eating out, we're down to only a few choices. We're food snobs - don't like coffee shops and food courts, don't like dirty restaurants with fugly stools and lots of sweaty shouting people, don't like these new-fangled kopitiams that charge an arm and a leg for regular hawker stuff.

So that doesn't leave us a whole lot of options. Most western restaurants at the mall are for noobs who don't know better. I can cook the same stuff better and healthier at home for a fraction of the cost. As for chinese food, we steer clear of those dragon restaurants which are just like the kopitiams. Over 10 bucks for a freakin' wonton noodle, are you kidding me?

So it's pork and beans for us!! It's a drug used to treat migraines and epilepsy in adults and children, and lately it's been found that it could possibly cause birth defects such as cleft lips.

It's hard to believe how a medication that is supposed to treat one problem could end up causing a whole different set of problems to an innocent child. Personally I do not know of anyone who has been affected by this.

But whoever is affected should engage an Austin personal injury attorney to take legal action and seek compensation. If it does, I'm sure you're not alone. I know of many, many folks who claim it's additional work they really don't need and would rather avoid having to do.

I think sometimes even the best of us procrastinate till the last minute. You either have to get your taxes done on time or seek an extension somehow. To be honest, getting even a little extra time is a great relief. If you're in the US, you can file for an tax extension form 2010 online very easily.

Quite frankly, given the choice, an extension would be great because some of us are truly busy with 101 things on our plates and could really use the extra time to sift through the piles of documents and sort things out.

One of my girl friends is in the habit of procrastinating till the last minute and then in desperation, she solicits help from her kids to help her get through some of the paperwork. Not always a good idea, I don't think unless your kids are a little older and can be trusted to get it right but desperate times call for desperate measures especially when the deadline is drawing closer.

Long weekend

I can't believe we have a long weekend right here. There's so much talk about being environmentally friendly and so on. Now we mustn't forget that medical waste is potentially infectious and need to be disposed of properly in order not to run the risk of causing harm to humans and other living creatures.

We would assume most of it comes from healthcare-related facilities but there are other not so obvious sources such as tattoo parlors, schools and even theme parks. Medical waste is bio hazardous waste that should be treated carefully so that they do not add to the pollution problems that already abound Mother Earth.

As part of the US environment protection program, there are solutions out there that we can safely rely on to ensure that this potentially bio hazardous waste is disposed of in a fashion that will not harm people or the environment. These solutions involve an environmentally friendly process of treating and disposing of such material through the use of an autoclave, or steam sterilization, to disinfect the waste.

You can't believe what a relief it is to know this. I'm sure you are too if the thought has ever struck you about stuff like this.

Stressful

Driving has become more of a health hazard than ever. Not that we're not adventurous but there are some restaurants, very popular ones too I might add, that we eat at once and never go back.

Take New York, New York and Delicious, for instance. They're always packed. We went there once, stood in line and waited like idiots. And the food is, shall I say, regular stuff that I cook at home all the time.

Their food may be a novelty to those who are unfamiliar with Western food so they can't tell how stuff is supposed to taste or if it's even authentic. So they're prepared to fork out big bucks to be seen dining at a Western restaurant.

Us? We want something different when we eat out, a new taste, a new twist to the same old, same old, not something that I can easily whip up at home. Well, the food at these places is everyday stuff to us - the pies, pastas, pizzas - and my kids say I make it much tastier. So there!

Be careful with that cold therapy

Spring is here for many of you. I'm sure you can't wait to get out of the house to get some fresh air and sunshine. There's no shortage of outdoor activities out there. Wouldn't it be a welcome change to trek a jungle trail instead of walking on the treadmill?

It's easy to get a little too enthusiastic with those limbs and joints though. Luckily most minor injuries can be treated with cold therapy such as an icepack.

So simple, right? Except that the danger with cold therapies is that if you apply temperatures that are too cold for an extended period of time on your injury, you may be causing more damage than good.

Some people are suffering chronic pain, frostbite, even permanent nerve damage as a result of cold therapy gone wrong and have landed themselves in more than a simple cold therapy lawsuit.

O’Hanlon, McCollom & Demerath – Personal Injury Lawyers – 808 West Avenue, Austin, TX. 78701 – 512-494-9949

Bigger, tastier, cheaper!

We've practically given up on eating out since our holiday overseas. Even though many of the restaurants are franchises and the food quality, serving sizes and prices are supposed to be pretty standard, let me assure you it's not.

To be very honest, MD is the one place I'd never thought we'd ever stop visiting. But we have! The burgers are much smaller here and taste different. The varieties are naturally very limited when compared to what we can get overseas. They have juicy burritos, scrumptious bacon burgers, huge refreshing salads and their coffee is almost as good as Starbucks but costs a whole lot less.

The servings at CH, FR and TR can feed two overseas but here, after wolfing down your entire order, you still feel like reaching across the table to help yourself to someone else's order! Girls!

And these days, there are so many beauty products out there that I'd have to take up a course at the Regency Beauty Institute to learn the art of applying makeup to achieve different results. Might be interesting though.

Till then, my daughter will have to pick up some pointers here and there from magazines, the internet and her friends. I think that's how most of us learn anyhow.

This blog post was based on information provided by Blogitive. But then I read about the possible crowd control problem at Hong Kong Disneyland and decided against going.

Obviously these guys have little experience handling crowds, what more with the lovely mentality of the Asian crowd cutting queues and shoving and pushing. Well, I'd rather not be caught in the midst of that madness, thanks. Neither would I want to hear Mickey and Minnie speak Cantonese. Ya? Well, now do you understand why I, a self-professed shopaholic, am avoiding the mall at all cost? Hahaha. I never thought I would do that but really, when push comes to a shove, I might as well save my hard-earned money to buy gold bullion instead of blowing it.

That said, I have a new addiction now. I prefer to shop online. I don't have to dress up. I don't have to spend on eating out. I just stare at my computer screen all day. Which is more than I can say for people who are wasting their time on Facebook all day long. So ya, if there's cheap gold to be found on the internet, that's where I'll be.

spa at home

There's a reason why I say the bathroom is the most important room in the house except for maybe the kitchen. The bathroom is where you can be alone and not have to face anyone else if you're not up to it.

So if the bathroom is the most important room in the house, shouldn't it be done up in a way that makes you breathe a sigh of relief just to step inside and close the door?

I would certainly say so! If you were to go to www.betterbathrooms.com, you'll find items that will simply transport your private space into a heavenly retreat.

I think that if you had the space and talent to design your bathroom in a way that it becomes your private space to sit back, relax and find reprieve from the day's rush, you've got yourself a spa right there in your own home.

No need to travel anywhere to find that spa experience. Stock it with tons of magazines, light a few candles here and there, and just sit in your own bathroom at home! Man, how did I just come up with such a brilliant idea? When I was little, I used to have a collection of cute, fanciful purses that were given to me on my birthdays. Those were very precious to me and I would keep them away and take them out once in a while to look at them.

As I grew older and got busier with other things, I gradually forgot about my little collection of precious purses. Until the other day, I found them again and inside a few of them, I found some rusty old gold coins that I've had forever.

I'm sure they're not worth much and indeed I would never dream of selling them. Yes, I guess it's rare for many of us to drink milk because well, after we kicked the milk bottle, most of us rarely ever drank milk again. Not in our later childhood years, not in adulthood. Somehow milk is associated with babies and old folks. Us grown ups, we would never be caught dead drinking milk, seems to be the local mentality. So to even think that schoolgoing kids can somehow be made to drink milk (as opposed to Milo, Horlicks and Coke) is unimaginable. I'm getting invites through the year and I've long run out of gift ideas. It used to be that in our parents' time, they would just go out and buy gold bullion or jewelry as gifts but these days, with the economy the way it is, whoever wears gold jewelry any more?

Better to invest in gold bullion than show off the glittery stuff, they say. So it's not surprising she has mentioned that when she graduates high school next year, she wants to join one of the hair schools in Wichita and become a beautician. My girl friend thinks it's floosy to choose a career like that.

But I think it's okay, as long as her daughter is passionate about it and truly loves what she does and it pays the rent. Right? Who knows one day she might end up being the make-up artist for a wilted Paris Hilton or a hagged Justin Beiber. I told my girl friend not to fret over it. My kids are so used to my style of cooking that when they eat someone else's cooking, they usually turn their noses up and say, it's not the same. Maybe I've inevitably made food snobs of my kids because I tend to turn everything I cook into some sort of gourmet meal with all the bells and whistles.

And I've noticed, or at least my kids tell me, "other people's mothers" make pasta with tomato sauce or so little sauce it's like eating plain noodles. I tend to add a lot of extras to my meals because well, that's just me! I can't speak for other mothers.

hooked on cooking shows

Like I said, I'm beginning to get the hang of watching cooking shows. Yes, these are the real deal where they show you all the secrets, tell you how to save and show you quick and easy ways to whip up a nutritious meals.

The beauty of it is that chefs are cooking 2 or 3 things simultaneously, just like I would at home. Most of the cooking shows I've seen only show one dish being cooked at a time. I think it's definitely more realistic to be cooking a few dishes at once.

While one is boiling, you can get started on something else. That's what we do in real life, isn't it? You don't stand there and wait to complete one dish before starting on another, right? You betcha. I think those in the know, the people who are well-versed in financial investments, will tell you that gold is a very stable investment and that it's really worth investing in if you have the money.

And I'm inclined to believe that. I have heard people talk about the pros of investing in gold as opposed to other forms of investment, all while sitting in the bank awaiting my turn to do my banking. Three showers a day makes me a happy camper.

So now can you understand why I say the bathroom is a pretty important room in the house. I mean, it's the only room that the occupants fight over, right? And when we go to a hotel, the bathroom is the first place I check out. Gotta love those luxurious bathroom suites where I can soak for hours without being disturbed!

Which reminds me of the one with a big jacuzzi overlooking the open ocean which totally had me fascinated ever since. And this hotel was right in the middle of the city too, can you imagine that? I could sit here and dream about it all day.

In our busy city lives, we hardly have the time nor the luxury of lingering in the bathroom. It's always rush, rush, rush! One kid in, one kid out on school days. Shower and run! It's perpetually the busiest room in the house and although I hate cleaning it, it still is, without a doubt, my most favorite room in the entire house.

the goldsmith shop

Back in the old days, I used to follow the elders to the goldsmith shop to buy gold whenever there was a wedding coming up. Gosh, did I love looking at those shiny trinkets and mentally picking out the ones I would buy if I had money.

I guess that's what all bored kids do when they have to tag along with the adults who sometimes dally for hours at the goldsmith shop, undecided over what to buy and then haggling prices afterwards. Ha! These days, I don't think many kids have even been into a goldsmith shop. It's not safe to wear gold but if you're thinking of investing in it, then it's obviously a good choice.

convenient lunches

What do you cook on a hot day like this? Frankly I would never have thought of that but I have to agree it's a jolly good idea.

Sometimes people leave totally impractical stuff to their children and grandchildren, and they have to find some way to dispose of it later. People would put up a ton of pictures in one blog post followed by about 10 words. Not sure if language is the restricting factor here. The best part is other locals would flock there (the nosy parkers) every day and leave a ton of comments.

But that's not nearly as disgusting as people who blog a topic to death. Well, basically these are the folks from probably the smaller towns where there's nothing much happening in their lives, who aren't married, have no kids to talk about and are too stingy to spend any of their hard-earned money on anything.

They don't eat out, they don't go on vacation, they complain daily about every single cent they spend, so what is there to life? And when something does happen, like the death of their dog or someone in their family, they'll capitalize on that and blog the topic to death! For months, they'd be blogging about that same topic!! They even recycle old posts of their dog who has died, returned to life and died again. Because that's all they have to crap about, the poor things!

you could be eligible for a settlement

Okay, just got this piece of news from a friend. And why not? Whenever we have weddings to go to, I'm always fretting about what would be the perfect gift or the practical gift. In the old days, I believe people just never had to think very much about what kind of gift to give, they simply always just gave gold or some article of gold.

Now that we are so spoilt for choice, it's even more stressful for the gift-giver. I'm definitely all for the couple coming up with a wish list so guests would have an idea what a useful gift would be. Sometimes the guests aren't very close to the couple or don't know them very well and it really helps to know. They will either meet up at the cafe or spend the day walking around the mall. There are lots of benches where they can sit and rest when they get tired. Sometimes I wonder what they have left to talk about seeing each other for 8 hours every single day (LOL). But trust these guys to be chatting about everything under the sun. One of their favorite topics is how health. Although I doubt any of them know how to go online, they still know what brand of kendall briefs are the best and where they can get cheap vitamins.

wake up

It amazes me that many parents don't have the slightest inkling about school these days. I mean, it's not like it used to be in their time, in more ways than one but these folks still have such a righteous view about the system. Well, wake up and smell the stink, folks. It ain't like it used to be no mo. If you'd bother to talk to your kids, you'd probably be so shocked you'll need smelling salts, hehe.

who's next?

It's funny how I sometimes forget that the reason I started this blog was to warn the old folks out there about people like my half-brother, Kaa and half-sister-in-law, Ursula. Ursula asked my father for his will, opened it and read it while he was standing right there. Since finding out who's in the will, she and Kaa have been hatching plans to 'swallow' up my father's house.

And now they have. They bought a house and moved there with my father, thus effectively forcing him to sell his house. So now with the property having been liquidated, the will is basically void so they stand to get everything and whoever else had stood to gain anything from the will now gets nothing.

So there's our merry couple and their 2 young sons going around trying to win over the other relatives with expensive gifts and playing the overall filial son and daughter-in-law. At home, they totally ignore my father and make use of him to babysit their maid who babysits their sons. And basically that's where they're at in terms of accumulating their ill-gotten wealth. Who's next on their hit list? We'll have to wait and see.

vainpot goes to beauty school

When my niece was a toddler, she was very vain and would constantly be playing pretend at makeup and hairdos. Well, she's just completed high school at the end of last year and wondering about her career. After some pondering, she told her mom she's made up her mind. It's not surprising our family's beauty expert has decided to pursue a course at the cosmetology school in Missouri. I'm excited for her, I think we all are. We just know she's going to make the family proud. And as for the rest of us ladies, we're just waiting for her free beauty advice and treatments  !
